WHAT MAKES THIS RACE UNIQUE
- You run on actual airport runways. Not next to them. On them. The HWO 5K takes you inside the airport fence and across three runways of North Perry Airport on a certified 5K course. There is no other race in South Florida where you can say your 5K was on live tarmac.
- World War II airplanes line the course. Not kidding. Two WWII airplanes, a private jet, a helicopter, an amphibian airplane, and more aircraft on display along the route. Most races have mile markers. This one has fighter planes.
- You’re off the runway by 10:30 or you’re being escorted off. “Any participant on the runway at 10:30am will be escorted off the course by authorized personnel without exception.” The runway has to reopen. The clock is real. That’s a start line with teeth.
- Hosted by Broward County itself. This is a Broward County event at a Broward County-operated airport. Full-scale production, aviation-themed finisher medal for every participant, event tee, snacks, giveaways, and info tables from North Perry Airport businesses waiting at the finish. The Kids Dash at 8:30 AM keeps the whole family in on the day.
RACE HISTORY
- The HWO 5K on the Runway — “Walk, Run, Fly” — is Broward County and North Perry Airport’s signature community event, turning one of South Florida’s busiest general-aviation airports into a one-of-a-kind 5K course each November. Runners cross three live runways past historic WWII aircraft, private jets, and helicopters — all under the official okay of the airport authority — in a race that has become South Florida’s most unmistakable aviation experience on foot.
